CO-OPERATIVE FREEZING.

THE WAINGAWA WORKS

A CANNING? PLANT TO BE

INSTALLED

BACON-CURING MAY BE IN

CLUDED

Af an extraordinary general moating of the shareholders ot the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company, presided over by Mr J. C. Cooper, yesterday afternoon, tlie special resolutions passed at the recent meetiug were uuauimously confirmed.

The Chairman reported that the engineer had been instructed to call tenders forthwith, aud that the works were expected to be ready by November Ist next.

All necessar}-arrangements are to be pushed on with every aespatch. The directors have decided to fence, form aud metal a road leadiug from the maiu road iuto the works past MiBrooks' house. This road will be about half a mile iv length, aud tenders will be called for its construction at once. Tenders are also to be called for the digging of a drain to take away tbe overflow from tho swamp.

It will be remembered that some doubt was expressed earlier iv tbe season as to whether tho springs, from which pare of the water supply is to be derived, would maintain their volume of water duriug tho summer months. In consequence of these statements, they have beeu kept under close observation duriug tho whole of the dry period that has been experienced of late, aud it is extremely satisfactory to note that they have maintained their volume iv a manner that has realised the most sanguine expectations of the Engineer aud others.

With regard to these springs, the question now rises if the swamp, which is caused by their overflow, could not be turned to some useful purpose. A manager of some wellkuo'wn South Island freezing works gives it as his opinion that the swamp, if cleaned out and converted into a reservoir, would form au almost, invaluable auxiliary water supply in the event of some unforeseen shortage of water. It is estimated that this work can be done at a comparatively low cost. QUESTION OF BACON-CURING. The establishment of these works is already opeuiug up uew possibilities with regard to auxiliary works. Dairy farmers in the district have from time to time expressed the desire that tho Company should also establish bacoucuring works, and recently a body of them waited on Mr J. C. Cooper at Pahiatua with a request that this be done. The proposition will, in all probability, be considered by the directors if sufficient capital is forthcoming from the dairy farmers, all of whom are more or less interested. The estimated cost of tbe plant would only be about £3000, whereas if a firm built bacon-curing works alone it would cost, roughly, some £7000, as they would have to instal a refrigerating plant and cooling chambers, which the Company will already be in possession of. CANNING WORKS. The directors evidently do not believe in allowing the grass to grow uuder their feet. They are going to make a vigorous canvass for more capital with which to erect a canning plaut in conuectiou with the freezing works. The plans aro already iv hand, although they will not attempt to make a start till next spring, as the works can be constructed iv about three months. Houce if a start were made in, say, October they would probably be ready as soou as required. Eveu if they are not, anything on hand can be easily held in the chambers until they are. There is some talk, too, of establishing a cooperage in connection with the works, and eventually perhaps a box factory.
