Tho criminal session of the Wellington Supremo Court opened to-day. Judge Chapman said that the list of cases ;-;et down was neither very long nor vory complicated. At tho same timo, there were some serious cases whoro persons abnormally constituted had inteferod with youug persons of oither sox. Thoro was a case where a man was charged with wounding Jiis son-in-law. Certainly there was a sentimental aspect of the caso, hut the jury was not entitled to consider this. Also there was a case where a man was charged with wilfully sotting lire to his house. The only other caso,
outside of some ordinary charges of assault and robbery, was ouo whero a mau was charged with selling au obscene publication (Now Zealand Truth). Tho article complained of referred to old, stale filth, raked up from twenty years ago. He asked the jury to pay particular attention to the stylo iv which the article was written, aud also to see whether there was any bona lido reason tor publishing such matter. Edwin Fowlds, on two charges of theft, was sentenced to twelve months imprisonment; Heuare Dowues, for breaking, entering aud theft, to eighteen mouths. James Smith, a youth, charged with theft, forgery aud uttering, was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. William Barry, for theft, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment; Arthur Manning, forgery aud uttering, twelve mouths; Harry Rowles, breaking, entering and theft, twelve mouths.
