AMERICAN POLITICS.

Mr Hearst's Candidature

A cable message on Saturday stated that Mr Elihu Root, Secretary of State, speaking at Utika, New York State, on behalf of President Roosevelt, fiercely denounced Mr W. R. Hearst, the Democratic candidate for the Governorship, whom he described as "an insincere, self-seeking demagoge."

New York, Saturday,

The President's unprecedented intervention in the New York State election campaign is likely to cause Mr Hearst's defeat.

Mr Root's terrible arraignment of Mr Hearst of " sowing seeds of class hatred, fomenting discontent, and inciting the men who murdered President McKinley," has caused a tremendous sensation.

Almost all the New York journals enthusiastically applaud President Roosevelt's impressive and startling note of warning.
