A Sydney message states that the secretary of the Bakers' Union has been sentenced to two years' imprisonment for the larceny of the funds of the Union. Missionaries report that a terrible famine exists in the northern part of Kiangsu province, in China. Ten million people are on the brink of starvation.
M. Dessaigne, French Minister of Justice, intends to introduce a Bill abolishing capital punishment, and substituting imprisonment for life. The Bill will limit the legal term of solitary confinement to six years. H.M.S. Pegasus has been recommissioned for a fresh term on the Australian station.
A banquet was held at Ottawa on Saturday in honour of the Mikado's birthday. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, in tho course of a speech, remarked that as Japanese tea was used in nearly every Canadian household, he hoped Canadian food products would soon be on every Japanese table. He expected the commercial convention just concluded would lead to extensive trade between Canada and Japan.
