THURSDAY CRICKET NOTES.

[IIV " POINT."!

Tlio championship match, Oarllou A v. Star, was concluded, on the I'urk Oval, last Thursday, when tho former won l>y mix wickets. As, on tho provloiM ThufMtlay, bad weather conditions prevailed, ilio uftornoon being interspersed with .showers, which handicapped the bowlers and lioldmuen, owing to tlio slippery sUlo of tho ball. The wicket, too, was very dead, but nevertheless some good batting form was shown.

Oarlton, who had six wickets down for 113, continued their innings, and added anothor 32 before the last wicket fell. Waters added 13 to his previous week's total of 18 not out, making his total 01.

Prow made his first appearance in Thursday cricket, and in his modest contribution of a dozen, I noted a fine leg-hit for four, all run out. The outstanding bowler for Stars was Hoar, who kept an admirablo length, and his analysis, which reads li overs, i maidens, 21 runs, and 5 wickets, speaks for itself, and needs no comment.

The Stars, in llieir second innings, totalled 107, a respectable score, when the state of tho wicket is taken into consideration. Of the Star batsmen, pride of place must be given to Esson, who was again unbeaten with 42 opposite his namo. His innings, although marred by a couple of chances, was marked by rattling good strokes all round the wicket.

Hoar displayed sound batting for 18, being disposed of by a good catch by Prow. Edwards batted attractively for 16, his off stroke being much in evidence. Perry, unfortunately, did not get going, a shooter from E. Welch upsetting his leg stump.

Out of six bowlers tried by Carlton, Waters proved to be the mosi successful, getting three wickets for 21 runs. Swan,

Congdon, E. Welch and Boyd divided the other wickets.

Carlton, who required 52 runs to win, knocked them up for the loss of four wickets, although a bad start was made, Waters, Welch, Eagle and Swan going for a few runs apiece, but Congdon and Prow saved the situation, both showing good batting form for their runs.

Edwards was the most successful of the otar bowlers in this innings, getting three of the four wickets that fell, for 22 runs.

In reviewing this match it is only fair to say that the Stars were handicapped, last Thursday, by the absence of Logan, through pressure- of business, whose batting and bowling were undoubtedly missed ; but still I think the better team won.

Through the courtesy of the W.F.C.A. skipper,! am enabled to give a few notes on the Carterton-W.F.C.A. match, which was commenced at Carterton, last Thursday. W.F.C.A. had lirst strike, but were soon disposed of for 37 runs, the only double-figure contributors being Judd (15) and Williams (13).

Maunsell and Reid were the destroying angels for Carterton, the former getting seven wickets for nineteen runs, and the latter three wickets lor six runs.

Carterton in their first innings made 120, the principal contributors being Maunsell (33), Fairbrother (30), and Hart (25), all showing sound batting.

The fielding of the W.F.C.A. was fair, and a brilliant one-handed catch by Judd calls for special mention.
