WAIRARAPA AND EAST COAST P. AND A. SOCIETY.

General Committee

(Hpecial to Daiia Times.)

A meeting of the General Committee of the above body was held on Saturday morning, in the Agricultural Hall, Cartcrton, ■when there were present —Messrs Q. Donald (President) in the chair, F. J. Dillon, G. Gaskin, J. Snell, J. G. Oates, A. Anderson, W. C. Buchanan, G. Tully, J. Strang, 11. R. Bunny, D. Reid and 11. A. Bunny.

Correspondence was received from the Manawatu A. arid P. Association, to the effect that their Show dates would probably be previous to those of Canterbury.

Mr A. Buchanan, Palmerston North, wrote that he and Mr Paul Hunter, Hawke's Bay, were endeavouring to arrange for larger prizes to be given to exhibitors in dairying competitions, and were suggesting that certain conditions should be made in the dairying section with a view to improving the breeding of dairy herds. The following were the important suggested conditions :—(1) That the sire of the cow must be a registered purebred animal, (2) That the yield of butter-fat be counted on the 24. or 28 hours of the test on the Showgrounds. (Test on farm would be too expensive). (3) That two points be awarded for every ounce of butter-fat produced. (-1) That three points be allotted for every month the cow has been in milk over three months from date of calving, but not more than twelve points to be so allowed. (5) That, where practicable, the weight of each cow be ascertained and taken into consideration before awarding the prizes, since it is generally more expensive to keep the larger animal. (G) That when the weights have been taken, two points be allowed for every hundred pounds live weight below a thousand pounds, but not more than eight points be awarded. —Resolved to reply that while this Society agree with the writer, it thinks the suggested conditions would be impracticable.
