Acting-Commissioner Edwards, of the Salvation Army, who recently completed his evangelistic tour throughout South Africa tells that while inspecting the Army native ttg[~ work he was anxious to hold a meeting in a krall near Emlungisweni, but it was found that the inhabitants had gone away to take part in a " beer drink." The officer decided to follow them, and upon reaching the spot they found fifty or sixty men and women sitting round the tub containing the beer. Nearly all were in an advanced stage of intoxication. One drinking utensil—a paraffin oil tin—served for the whole company, it being passed from hand to hand round the circle. And so the " civilization " of the native proceeds !
