OBITUARY.

The Hon. J. T. Peacock.

Christchurch, Last Night,

The Hon. J. T. Peacock, M.L.C., died this morning. Deceased was tho eldest son of Mr John J. Peacock, and was born in 1827 in tho Hawkesbury district, New South Wales. He came to New Zealand when fifteen years old, and settled down in Canterbury as a merchant and ship-owner. He sold his business in 1863, ancl visited England. He was a member of the Provincial Council in the early days, ancl Secretary for Public Works for two years. In 1869 he was elected Member for Lyttelton, and five years later he was called to the Legislative Council. He was one of the original promoters of the Kaiapoi AVoollen Company and of the New Zealand Shipping Company. He was connected also with other successful commercial enterprises. He was twice married, and has a widow and stepsons.
