THE KUMARA'S IMMIGRANTS.
Of the 213 immigrants who arrived from England by the Kumara last Saturday there were only seventeen farmers, who, with their wives and families, made up but thirtyfive persons. The other additions to the " backbone of the country " were a dairyman and a cattleman. Of tradesmen and mechanics there were about fifty, who, with their wives and families, made a community of eighty-three persons all told. There was also an undue .proportion of unskilled labour. Following are particulars of the occupations stated by the immigrants:— Seventeen farmers, one dairyman, one cattleman, two butchers, two domestics, six miners, three millers, three gardeners, two plumbers, five painters, one stonemason, one slater, two plasterers, one builder, eight labourers, two carpenters, one mechanic, four engineers, two wood-carvers, one fitter, one groom, two bakers, one coachpainter, one wheelwright, seven bootmakers, one upholsterer, two drapers, one hosier, one grocer, one mariner, one warehouseman, one shipwright, two cellarmen, four clerks, one teacher, one carrier, one railwayman, one minister, one footman. There were 201 of English birth, five persons from Scotland, one.from Ireland, and six foreigners. Of the foreigners, there were two farmers, and one brought his family. From the above details it is quite clear that, so far as the passengers by the Kumara are concerned, our population has received a disproportionate addition of town workers. — N.Z. Times.
