The Annual Show.

The weather was beautifully fine, and the number of visitors from other parts of the Colony was greater than in any previous year. Tho falling off in exhibits was chiefly in the pig, poultry, dairy cattle, and thoroughbred horse classes. Tho quality of the stock, however, is exceptionally good in almost every class, and the Shorthorn cattle are said to be equal to anything in the colonies. HORSES. The principal prize- taker in tho thoroughbred horse classes was tho Hon. J. D. Ormond. In tho draught horse classes Douglas McLean, A. Alexander, and D. Chambers were the principal prize-takers. Messrs J. 11. Coleman and' Douglas McLean were the most successful with carriage. horses. uattle. In the Shorthorn cattle classes those old opponents Archdeacon.- S. Williams, tho Mount Herbert Estate, and Douglas McLean carried oil the bulk of the prizes. 11. M. Campbell and Nelson Bros, were the most successful prize-takers with Herefords and polled Angus respectively. Slack Bros, were practically the only exhibitors of Ayrshire cattle, and they swept the board of all tho prizes except one. Paul Hunter was the chief exhibitor and principal prize-taker of Jersey cattle. SHEEP. In the Lincoln classes, Douglas McLean, T. Tanner and the Hon. J. D. Ormond gained most prizes. The competition for Boarder Leicesters was practically confined to Nelson Bros, and Hon. J. D. Ormond, and the awards went very evenly to these exhibitors. In the English Leicester classes, Douglas McLean and Nelson Bros, were most successful. There was keen competition between a number of breeders in the Romney Marsh section, E. Short, G. Wheeler, F. Hutchinson and Son, B. Chambers and H. Beyers were most successful. Douglas McLean and G. P. Donnelly were the principal prize-takers for Merinos, The prizes for Shropshire Downs were mostly divided between Douglas McLean, W. A. Beecroft, and Nelson Bros. With Southdowns, the competition was chiefly between G. P. Donnelly, Nelson Bros., and B. 11. Slack, the lirst-named showing a number of the sheep purchased by him from the King. Douglas McLean, Nelson Bros, and G. P. Donnelly were prize-takers for crossbred sheep. With fat sheep, Nelson Bros., Douglas McLean, and R. 11. Todd were most successful. pigs. Slack Bros, and E. White divided the prizes for Berkshire pigs. AY. J, Harris and E. AVhite carried oil chief honours with Yorkshires. E. AVhite secured nearly all the prizes for Tamworths. OTHER EXHIBITS. AVilliams and Kettle, Limited, and the Hawke's Bay Farmers' Co-operative Association, Limited, were almost the only exhibitors of seeds, the former gaining most awards. The section devoted to home industries, art work and native industries attracted very large entries, and was a distinct feature of the Show. COMPETITIONS. The competitions. were of course one of the principal attractions of the show. These resulted as follows : —Machine sheep-shear-ing competition—Ku Oa, 187 points, 1; Johnny Keefe, 183 points, 2; D. Gemmell 180 points, 3. Pony leaping match— Nelson Lane's Prince 1, Miss Twist's Tim 2, G. McDonald's Topsy 3. Ladies' hunters' competition—James Coombe's Duchess 1, Miss Reynolds' King Jimmy 2, 11. Hassell's Dick Turpin 3. Best pony under 141 hands, driven by lady—o. Nelson's Tommy 1, J. H. McNiven's Patch 2, Douglas McLean's Madge 3. Best pony under 131 hands, driven by a lady—F. Davis' Nigger 1, Miss A. Wenley's Madge 2, Miss Beatrice McLean's Ruby 3. Hunters' competitions— Miss Reynolds' King Jimmy 1, A. Groome's Dick Turpin 2, J. P. C. McCulloch's Nogi 3. Driving competition, for ladies—Mrs Sunderland's The Shinner 1, Mrs Hassell's Cuba 2. Driving competition, for men—J. Semplee's Wilkin 1, C. E. Twists' Tim 2.' .Hastings, This Day. The weather is splendid for People's Day. Trams are arriving packed with passengers and the town is crowded with people. Yesterday's takings constitute a record. Judging light horses and jumping events are the principal proceedings to-day.
