WOOLSTON ORPHANAGE.
Charges against the Matron.
(By Telegraph — Press Association.)
Christchurch, Last Night,
At the Charitable Aid Board to-day, a report was submitted by the Institutions Committee in regard to the recent enquiry made into the conduct of the Matron of the Woolston Orphanage.
The report recommended that a letter be sent to the Matron conveying the Board's strong disapproval of certain expressions admitted by her to have been used to Roman Catholic children, and forbidding any repetition of similar language. This clause was adopted by the Board.
The report also stated that the Committee were of the opinion that the time had arrived for the management of the Orphanage to be re-organised, with a view to placing the institution in charge of either a married couple or a younger Matron.
In the discussion which ensued, two members expressed the opinion that the Committee had gone beyond their order of reference, because the Board decided at their, last meeting that the charges, except that incorporated in the first clause of the report, had not been proved.
Amendments to the effect that the Matron's services be dispensed with after various terms of notice were lost, and finally the report, consisting of the.first clause only, was adopted.
