CARTERTON NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent).
Everything was football here on Saturday. The Gladstone v. Csr'erton Juniors match for the banner wa3 played, and resulted in a desperate battle and a drawn game. As it was concluding, news arrived on the ground that Auckland had beaten the Britishers by 18 to nil. Up went hats, and the cheers of the crowd for Auckland, and then for Carterton and Gladstone, formed a remarkable mixture of enthusiasm. "Extras" were issued in remarkably quick time from the local offices, and messeugers on bicycles were to be seen in all directions going like the wind — and against the wind—carrying the news. A stranger would have thought that at least a British man-o'-war had sunk one of those impudent Russian privateers, and that war had been declared with Eussia !
The weather to-day is beautifully mild and spring like.
The funeral of "Hilly te Maori," the well-known Native drover, who was one of the politest of his people, took place yesterday, at the Black Bridge p%h. A largo number of Natives were present in spite of the rough weather.
