SEPTIC TANKS.

Not Successful in Sydney.

According to the following paragraph from the Sydney Telegraph, septic tanks are not proving successful in that city :— During tho muggy weather of the last few days the nuisance arising from the septic tanks of the North Sydney sewerage outfall at Long Bay, Middle Harbour, has been very noticeable, and residents in the vicinity are asking when the Water and Sewerage Board intend to <leal with the grievance. Some time ago there was a public agitation, and the Board, after an official visit of inspection, denied that there was anything amiss. But, after the Fisheries Commissioners (also after an inspection) unhesitatingly closed the place to fishing, the Board reluctantly admitted the existence •of the evil. Recently septic tanks were established at Balmoral Beach in connection with the Mosman sewerage system. Thus was in spite of strong protests from the Council aad residents of Mosman, who claimed that a popular holiday and picnic resort would be ruined. The prediction promises to be fulfilled, and the tanks are becoming a nuisance only a little less offensive than that at Long Bay. The position in this instance is of more than local importance, as the beach is visited by people from all parts of the city and suburbs.
