He was picked up in an unconscious condition, and conveyed to the Beaujon Hospital, where he wae placed in the men's accident ward. There the doctors discovered to their surprise that the patient was a young woman, and had her immediately removed to the women's ward. By this time Ihe lad who was in the trap, and who had run off, returned with several members of the lady's family. The young lady was the Countess Dian9 Ogier d'lvry, aged 20. She was *he eldest daughter of Count Ogier d'lvry, a retired army officer and a poet of some reputation. She was a highspirited girl, and very fond of outdoor exercises.

She had cut her hair short and assumed male attire so as to be able to go out alone or with a lad, without having to suffer the unpleasant attentions from young men to which ladies walking alone in the streets in France are unfortunately exposed. The Countess, who was a handsome young blonde, was found to be suffering from three fractures of the skull, which proved fatal. She died an hour after being admitted to the hospital.
