SOUTH WAIRARAPA NOTES.
(From a Correspondent).
The many friends in Mastorton of Mr J. W. Kershaw will be pleased to hear that he has been admitted into the profitable partnership of Messrs Pain and Haycock, general merchants, of the Valley trade. Greytown cricket has recently suffered a loss in two departures from the senior team, Mr Neil Madsen, of the Standard, having left the district for Patea, and Mr Anketell for Wellington. Both are keen young cricketers who should make names for themselves wherever they go.
I am sorry to report that Greytown's worthy Mayor, Mr J. D. Heagarty, is still suffering from a painful attack of sciatica. Another trip to the Hot Lakes is under consideration. The Mayoral election is in March, and 1 fancy Mr Heagarty will retire on his laurels. He and the present Council are at present at loggerheads upon all municipal questions, and this mode of working docs not please such nn indefatigable worker as our present Mayor. Two aspirants for the position are freely spoken of about town in the persons of Messrs Mark Maxton and A. C. Bicknell. Both are present members of the Borough Council, and capable workers.
The Annual Presbyterian Picnic was held in the Reserve on Wednesday afternoon, and was well attended by young folks and old. An exceedingly pleasant time was enjoyed, but long before sunset, tho musical charms of the Circus Band completely upset the calculations of the teachers, and the picnic came to a somewhat abrupt termination.
