A world's record in pole vaulting was recently established at the Dermoines University (U.S.A.) sports by a competitor named Chapman, who cleared 12ft. The previous best performance was lift 10-tin, by Clapp, of New York. L. B. Webster, Mew Zealand's champion amateur sprinter, recently inflicted a nasty gash on his right foot through an axe slipping while chopping wood, at New Plymouth. Fears are entertained that the wound will affect his running powers. At the inter-scholastic games of the Boys' Latin School, held at Baltimore (U.S.A.), on May Day, the famous sprinter, Duffey, raced against time over 75yds. A disagreement resulted between the time-keepers, some giving 7 l*ssec, and others 7 2-ssec. Both of these times are lower, however, than the record held by Long, of New York, who covered the distance in 7 3-ssec.
Casey, tho Colony's champion axeman, has just finished" the season with a splendid record. He started from scratch in twelve different chopping contests, and drew prize money every time. He has given as much as 75sec start in 18in blocks and 105 sec in 2Fr, and met as many as 27 competitors in one event. It is Casey's intention to attend the next Tasmanian carnival on November 26tb and 27th, with a view to competing for the world's championships. .
