Speaking of the late lamented Arthur Shrewsbury to tho editor of a London journal recently, Spaffortb, the erstwhile demon bowler,'stated :— " I have always held that Shrewsbury was the best batsman in the world on a slow wicket. It had to be a remarkably well bowled ball that got past his bat, for his defence was perfect; no matter how the ball may twist or break or shoot, Shrewsbury's bat was always well in front to stop it." But death has a deadly break that baffles all, and even clever Shrewsbury went down before a fast " shooter."
Shrewsbury underwent an operation in London in April, after which there were conflicting reports as to his health. He gavo _31030 to tho Nottingham Hospital. C. B. Fry, the famous cricketer, is suffering from brain fag, brought on by close application to press work. He may be absent from the cricket field for somo time.
Kermode, who went Homo last year to qualify for Lancashire, secured seven wickets for 32, for Manchester against Stockport, some weeks ago.
Hogue, of Newcastle, has just completed his second successful season on the cricket field. His aggregate of 1617 runs included four centuries, and was compiled in 23 completed innings. His highes score was 211.
