PROJECTED CHURCH AT NIREAHA.

Social Gathering in Coiinectioi

Therewith.

(b'ruiH Our Own, Correspondent.)

Jsy the kind invitation of Mr James Nicholls, the ladies of Nircaha were entertained to tea on Friday evening last, gentlemen being also admitted on payment of v- shilling. The object of the gathering was to introduce the project of a Church for the district, a sito for which has been already presented by Mr J. C. Nicholls. Mrs Mathieson, of Ekclahuna, had kindly consented to be present and sang two songs, receiving an enthusiastic encore. Tho Rev. J. Walker expressed tho pleasure ho felt in being able to sec this scheme fairly started before leaving the district. He announced that through tho zeal and energy of Mr Nicholls a sum of £50 (which it is hoped may ultimately be doubled) had been collected from outsido sources), £20 coming as the outcome of an appeal in the "English Church Times," by the Rev. A. C. Yorke, formerly Vicar of Mastcrton. £45 has been already promised in Nircaha, and it is hoped that a grant of £30 may bo obtained from tho Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. In addition, some 12,000 feet of timber have been promised by the various local sawmillers. In view of this promising start, it was felt that it would be possible to aim at the building of a Church to cost £300, and the Diocesian Architect had been instructed to draw plans in accordance with that estimate. The speaker exhorted the Church people of the district to work well together, particularly in prospect of tho impending change, and appealed for greater support to the efforts of the Lay Readers.

Tho following Committee was appointed to take in hand tho building of the Church : Messrs J. Nicholls (convener), J. Nicholls, C. Andrews, W. Cooper, jun., W. Kcrshaw, W. P. A. Kershaw, F. B.

Cousins; with power to add to their number.

It was resolved to organise a Ladies' Sewing- Boe in furtherance of the project

Tho proceeds of the gathering, which terminated with a dance, was devoted to the funds of the "Bee."
