NOTES AND COMMENTS. The total taxation on the Auckland racing carnival was. £51,955, the Racing Club paying £35,398 and the Trotting Club £16,566. *»* In the Wellington Cup Winning Hit has 8.11, which is a heavier impost than has ever been carried to victory in that event. It is only a pound more than De r by weight, which Winning Hit bore successfully at Rieearton and Ellerslie. At Riccahton he ran the twelve furlongs in 2min 34 l-ssee, and at Ellerslie in 2min 35 l-ssee. Sasanof has “retired” as many times as a prima donna, but it is stated by his owner that he will race no more. Sasanof, whose has won just on £21,000 in stakes and trophies, is the only horse to win both tue New Zealand and Melbourne Cups, and he won at all distances

from five furlongs to two miles, in handicaps and weight-for-age events.

An offer of £lOOO was lately refused for the Washdyke-trained colt Songbird. A report has been circulated that his owners placed £5OOO on him, but that was merely an intimation that he was not for sale to a particular buyer. Songbird is engaged in the Wellington Cup at 6.7, ani is only 41bs above the minimum in the Anniversary Welter, of one mile.

Solfanello is top weight in the Tele graph Handicap Trentham with 10.0 which is 41b more than he carried to vieto r y in the Newmarket Handicap at Ellerslie. The Railway Handicap winner (Silver Link) is not engaged but the other place-getters in the Ellerslie sprint race are down to run. Anomaly has gone up 51b, and The Hawk 31b. When he won on the second day Anomaly carried 8.12, but did not meet the other pair.

An unusual case is expeeted to claim the attention of the Trotting Association this week. At the Gore Trotting Club’s fixture the Timaru pacer Wild Thyme ran unplaced in a saddle event, but later came out and won a harness race, run at about the same rate. On a protest Wild Thyme was disqualified for the race, but his driver (who had ridden him earlier in the day) was not included in the disqualification, which did not extend beyond the particular race,

As competent starters are at a premium it is possible that Mr W. B. Freeman, of Waimate, who acts as

clerk of the course at many South Island meetings, will be given opportunities to prove his worth. On one occasion he acted as emergency

starter at Rieearton, but did not find favour with the critics. At the re-

cent Dunedin meeting, however, he despatched the last six races on the second day, and started both gallopers and trotters at Waikou-

aiti, with satisfactory results at both places.

P r ince Foote, whose death was announced by cable was owned by his breeder, Mr J. Baron. During a short Turf career the son of Sir Foote won eighteen races of the value of 16,520 sovs. He won the A.J.C and V.R.C. Da r bies, A.J.C, St, Leger, Cumberland Stakes, Melbourne Cup, and other important events.
