ONE CRICKET MATCH ON COOK’S GARDENS LIKELY THIS SEASON
The possibility of securing the use of enough wickets to allow only one senior A cricket game to be played on Cook’s Gardens each Saturday will be investigated by the Wanganui Cricket Association’s grounds committee. A proposal put before the management committee last night by Mr. J. Little, of the Wanganui Club, was that one senior A match should be played on Cook’s Gardens, one at the Wanganui Collegiate School and one at Victoria Park. Me suggested that one wicket at the Wanganui Technical College, three at the Collegiate School and three at Victoria Park could be prepared for use by lower grades. Mr. Little also proposed the laying of asphalt, wickets at Victoria Park for use by the juniors. With the use of matting, the best wickets possible would then be provided for i layers in this grade. The committee authorised its grounds sub-committee and its chairman to approach the Wanganui City Council on the matter of laying down either asphalt or concrete wickets at the park. Reasons stated by Mr. Little for wanting only one game played on Cook’s Gardens each week were that the senior A fixtures at. Collegiate and Victoria Park grounds would enable more senior A players to gain a close contact with players in the lower grades. This should provide encouragement for the lower-grade players, ho thought. The experience of playing on the centre wicket at Cook's Gardens, without the distraction of another game on the oval would be valuable to senior A players when they entered representative sides, he considered. i Mr. Little asked for an outright decision on whether only one match should be played on Cook’s Gardens but an amendment, moved by Mr. J. Bergerson, that the matter should be investigated hy the grounds commit- ■ tee, was carried on the casting vote of the chairman.
