ESTIMATED COST OF CITY’S NEW TOWN BRIDGE
The estimated cost of the proposed new town bridge is £l3O 000, and the Wanganui City Council has made application for a Government subsidy on the basis of £1 for £l.
This was disclosed at the monthly meeting of the council last night when a report from the Works Committee was under consideration. The committee stated that the Minister of Works (Mr Goosman) had advised by letter that in his opinion it would be preferable at this juncture that the council should submit its plans and proposals for examination by the department before a deputation was received to discuss the project further. A reply had been forwarded advising that the estimated cost of the proposed bridge was £130,000, and that the council had made application tor a subsidy on the basis of £1 for £l, the committee stated. A copy of the proposals, together with sketch plans, had already been submitted to both the Wellington and Wanganui offices of the Ministry of Works. Before finality was reached regarding the plans it would be necessary for the basis of sharing the cost, as between the council and the Government, to be determined. With the object of furthering the council's claims for special Government assistance the committee again urged the desirability of the Minister receiving a deputation to discuss the whole question.
