Hawke Cup Challenge The Wanganui Cricket Association will challenge Hawke's Bay for the Hawke Cup this season. This was decided by the association’s management committee when a letter was received from the New Zealand Cricket Council stating that nominations closed on November 1. Ledger Office Alterations to the counter at the Hunterville Post Office to allow for ledger facilities have been completed and the transfer of Savings Bank accounts from Wanganui to the ideal office will allow customers to make withdrawals without the previous delay. Application forms have already been sent out to depositors and a large number of accounts have already been transferred to the Hunterville office.—(O.C.)

Cricket Umpires Needed An appeal for more umpires was made at last night's meeting of the Wanganui Cricket Association’s management committee by Mr F. Jacobs. The need for umpires was so acute, he said, that consideration should be given to working out some system of payment to encourage more men to give up their Saturday afternoons to the bettering of the sport of cricket. Letter “L” Astray AU because a letter “L” went astray an advertisement in yesterday's issue conveyed a meaning not in accord with that intended. It was a notice relating to a meeting to be held tonight to be addressed by three independent candidates for the Wanganui Harbour Board. The advertisement said that “their ideals will appeal to you.” What it should have said was that their "ideas" would appeal. The letter "L” ■:.hould not have been allowed to stray. Car Accident. Mr Peter Newling, of Taihape, had a miraculous escape from serious injury when the car he was driving left the' road near the overhead bridge adjacent to the Waimarino goif links on Monday. Striking a boulder, the car overturned, Mr Newling being thrown from the front seat to the back. The car, which was purchased recently, was extensively damaged.— 0.C., Taihape. Fire Plugs In City.

A suggestion made by the Wanganui Fire Board that consideration be given to the moving of fire plugs in Victoria Avenue to the centre of the street when the tram tracks are removed has been referred to the Works Committee of the City Council. The board, in a letter to the council at its monhly meeting last night, stated that the plugs would then be in a more accessible location directly over the water main. The problem of cars parked over fire plugs would also be overcome.

Exchange of Land. Advice that the question of a proposed exchange of the Drill Hall site for approximately four and threequarter acres of land near the Wanganui Prison reserve, known as the Bluegum Plantation, had been fully considered by the Army Department and approved in principle was received by the Wanganui City Council from the Minister of Works (Mr. Goosmani at the monthly meeting last night. Officers of the department were resuming negotiations with the council and it should be possible to complete matters without undue delay, the latter stated.
