British Navy Has Two Plans To Combat Submarine Warfare
LONDON, Aug. 4.—A big part of ihe money allocated to the Navy under the new rearmament scheme will be spent on anti-submarine warfare, says the “Dail Mail’s” naval correspondent. Two plans of attack and defence have been worked out to prevent British cities being bombarded by guided missiles launched from surfaced submarines.
Plan one is to destroy enemy submarines as they leave their bases. Experts are working on advanced designs of “killer” submarines. These vessels would lie in wait for an enemy submarine, which could be picked up by underwater Asdics. They would be too fast to be detected by surface ships. The enemy would be sunk by automatic homing torpedo which cannot miss.
Plan two is defence of convoys. New anti-submarine frigates are being buHt at a cost of about £1,000,000 each. The Admiralty hopes also to go ahead with plans for reinforcing coastal forces.
