BRUSSELS PACT POWERS PLAN FOR DEFENCE
PARIS, July 21 (Recd. 7.55 pm).— The Defence Ministers of the five Brussels Pact Powers—Britain, Belgium, France, Holland and Luxemburg—meeting at Field - Marshal Montgomery’s headquarters in Fontainbleau last night, approved plans for larger, faster and more effective defence of Wstern Europe. A communique issued after the meeting said: “The Ministers considered the international military situation and the proposals drawn up by the Commanders-in-Chief. They recognised the necessity of speeding up without delay the production of war material and of increasing the defensive power of Western Union land, air and sea forces as a guarantee against aggression.”
A military spokesman commented: “This is Western Europe's answer to President Truman’s challenge. The West will put on a terrific effort—an effort with teeth in it.’’
Field-Marshal Montgomery addressed the meeting at some length and is understood to have emphasised the sense of urgency felt by all the Allied Chiefs-of-State.
