OHAKUNE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
A very happy afternoon was spent by members and friends on the occasion of the 15th birthday of the Ohakune Women’s Institute. The president, Mrs Rowlands, extended a welcome to all. Visitors were present from Raetihi, Pokaka, Horopito and Rangataua Greetings were received from Taihape and a member on holiday. An enjoyable programme of musical items, recitations, dances, competitions and sketches was presented. Sprays were presented to members whose birthday month it was, to visitors, and two members who were leaving the district. After a sumptions, afternoon tea, the birthday cake, made by Mrs Eaton and iced by Mrs Jury, was cut, Mrs Harris first lighting the 15 candles and Bernice Rowlands blowing them out. Congratulations were offered by Mrs Mitchell for the Ruapehu Federation, members of the various institutes and other organisations. The motto for the month, read by Mrs Lenden was, “Today’s best should be tomorrow’s starting point”. Monthly competitions resulted: Premier flower, Mrs Mitchell; premier vegetable, Mrs C E Smith; cooking, Mesdames Kirkwood 1, Lodge 2, Lenden 3; jam jar of flowers, Mrs. Weller; handwork, Mesdames Bernard 1, Mitchell 2, Weller 3
Trophies for the year’s competitions were won by the following: Premier flower, Mesdames Ritzer 1, Lenden 2, Tocker and Lodge 3; premier vegetable Mesdames Lenden 1, Lodge 2, Kirkwood 3; cooking, Mesdames Lenden 1, Clancey 2, Weller 3; handwork, Mesdames Mitchell 1, Campton 2, Lenden 3; most consistent competitors, Mesdames Lenden and Kirkwood. The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close a most enjoyable function.
