Anzac Day Services

The dead in three World Wars will be remembered on Tuesday next, Anzac Day, April 25. In Wanganui the day’s ceremonies will begin with a Dawn Parade. Returned Servicemen are requested to parade outside the club rooms, in St. Hill Street, at 5.45 a.m. Headed by the Wanganui Garrison Band, they will march to the Cenotaph, where a wreath will be jointly laid by the patron and president of the Wanganut R.S.A. and representatives of the South African Veteran's Association, and First World War section of the R.S.A. The Rev. H. W. Austin, C.F.; will conduct a brief service. The sounding of the “Last Post" and “Reveille” by Mr. Beale will end the setvice. The parade will march back to the club rooms where morning refreshment will be served. A Maori service will be held in Moutoa Gardens in the morning, at 10 o’clock, at the Maori memorial. The speaker will be Major George Marsden, a member of the Maori Battalion of the last war. The Wanganut Garrison Band will be in attendance.

The Civic Commemoration Service will be held at the Cenotaph, Queen's Park, at 2.30 p.m. The deputy Mayor, Cr. R. E. Jack, will preside. The guest speaker will be the Rev. V. C- Venimore C.F. If the weather is wet both the Maori Service and the Civic Commemoration will be held in the Opera House. At night the 1950 Anzac Review, “Anything Goes," will be presented in the Opera House. CATHOLIC SERVICE. Catholic Returned Servicemen will parade at St. Joseph’s Hall at 8.45 a.m. and accompanied by the Wanganui Garrison Band will march to the Cenotaph where a wreath will be laid. The parade will then march to St. Mary’s Church where solemn Requiem Mass will be celebrated. St. Augustine's High School cadets will take part in the parade. The Wanganui R.S.A. authorities request that all members of the community wear their poppies on Anzac Day.
