STATEMENT BY ANZAC DAY CIVIC COMMITTEE

“Tuesday next, April 25, is AnzaC Day," says a statement issued by the Wanganui Anzac Day Civic Committee yesterday. “It is hardly necessary to stress after the solemn observance of the day for so many years in the Dominion, that it commemorates the gallant dead of two World Wars, and in fact, all sons and daughters of the Empire who have given their lives in defence of freedom and the British way of life.

“Anzac Day has the significance ot a Sunday, and to establish this it has been so written into the law of our country, and is, therefore, to be regarded with due solemnity as befits and is worthy of such an occasion. It is not a public holiday, and on Its being set apart as one of commemoration it was intended that all persons, young and old, should show that they are not unmindful of their personal obligations to honour Anzac Day and through it those to whom the debt so incurred can never be paid.

“We earnestly appeal fellow citizens to join at the Cenotaph on Tuesday next, the assembly of veterans of past wars and others of us who will be in attendance, in the Civic Commemoration of Anzac Day. This is net asking much, especially when it is terne in mind that Anzac Day has been created a non-working day so that all may meet and give practical expression in a united commemoration of gratitude to the men and women who died. May we hope that or. this occasion our people will do their utmost to be present. May we again repeat that this is to be a civic commemoration. It cannot be truly worthy of that name and the spirit which Anzac represents, unless the citizens are joined together in an act of Remembrance to rededicate themselves to be worthy of the sacrifice made by the fallen In the days of armed conflict.” The committee comprises the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., Rev W. J. Couling (president of the Wanganui Ministers' Association) Mr. H. R. Gilberd (president of the Wanganui R.S.A.), and Capt. J. Malcolm (area officer).
