NEW ZEALAND BOXING TEAM CHOSEN FOR THE EMPIRE GAMES
PALMERSTON N., Sunday (PA). —Following the final trials in Palmerston North on Saturday night, the selectors, Messrs. N. McLean (Auckland), F. H. Hughes (Invercargill), R. Morris (Dunedin), and G. Watchorn (Palmerston North) announced the names for the Empire Games as follow:
Flyweight: C. Shanks (Southland); second string, D. Maddern -(Taranaki).
Bantamweight: R Broadhurst (Auckland); N. Collins (Taranaki). Featherweight: W. Patterson (Hawke’s Bay); B. Brown (Central Hawke's Bay). Lightweight: J. Barndon (Hutt Valley); K. Anderson (Otago). Welterweight: J. Mclvor (Hawke’s Bay); C. Brennan (Auckland). Middleweight: J. Beale (Southland); B. Bloor (Taranaki). Light-heavyweight: C. Rollinson (Auckland); T. Turnbull (Wellington).
Heavyweight: F. Creagh (Wellington); A Rooke (Wellington). In a statement after the trials, Mr. J. Simpson, chairman of the New Zea. land Boxing Council, said his organisation was not going to ask the Empire Games candidates to sign a bond tieing them to amateur status for two years after the Games. He understood that Australians were not so bound. He assured boxers that the New Zealand Council would fight the issue out with the Empire Games authorities.
Mr. W. H. Hunt, president of the New Zealand Boxing Association, congratulated those selected to represent their country and expressed c«tfidence that they would worthily uphold New Zealand's reputation against competitors from other Empire countries. Mr. K. A. Neale, former New Zealand and Auckland light-heavyweight champion, was appointed manager of the New Zealand team.
