Incentive Pay Advocated
DUNEDIN, Yesterday—A system of incentive rewards tor operatives was advocated by the acting-president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation (Mr D. V. Wilson) at the annual conference today. Mr Wilson said rn.at by the introduction of incentives operatives should be given the opportunity to increase their output. The continual upward trend of production costs was a matter of the greatest concern, and one which, if not socn checked, could result in serious repercussions for manufacturing industry. Over a wide range of goods labour represented a major item of cost, bqt this could be surprisingly reduced to the advantage of the consumer, operative and manufacturer if extra effort were linked with extra reward.
“I believe too, that the provision of incentive pay systems would go a long way to eliminate some of the restrictive practices which limit the output of an operative far below what can and should be done in a normal day’s work.” said Mr. Wilson. “The operative, of course, is entitled to protection against sweating and excessive pressure and must be made to feel that any extra remuneration earned is worthwhile. Many progressive industrial concerns throughout New Zealand are successfully operating incentive pay schemes, and I would strongly suggest to those members of our organisation who have not yet adopted the idea to do so at the earliest opportunity.”
