Hope That Solution May Be Found Today To Water front Dispute
AUCKLAND, Last Night (P.A.) Hopes are held at Auckland that the meeting of the National Executive of the Waterside Workers’ Union at Wellington tomorrow morning may result in a settlement of the port's overtime replacement dispute. Already 807 Auckland unionists, about half the branch's active membership, are absent from the wharves on a threeday penalty. Four ships are idle and many others are only part working. Unless an early return to work is arranged the effects of the dispute will mount still further. The dispute machinery of the Waterfront Industry Commission at Auckland was suspended today. The chairman of the Auckland Port Committee- Captain Stanich, ruled at a meeting that it would be adjourned until the dispute was settled. The Waterfront Industry Commission in a decision signed on Friday and issued on Monday, ruled against the attitude of the Auckland union that no labour should be engaged as overtime replacements outside the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. The branch, which had maintained since Tuesday of last week that the employers were flouting the Commission’s main order by engaging nonunion labour each afternoon for night work, has not yet discussed the decision.
