WANGANUI BASKETBALL REPS. RUNNERS-UP FOR ROSENBROOKE CUP

The Wanganui senior basketball representatives were joint runners-up in the quadrangular tournament held at Hastings on Saturday for the Rosenbrooke Cup. The tourney was won by Wellington, Wanganui and Hawke’s Bay were the runners-up, with Manawatu fourth. Wellington gained two wins and a draw, Wanganui and Hawke’s Bay had one win, one draw and one loss; Manawatu lost two games and drew one. Wanganui headed the list with the highest aggregate of scores, netting 42 goals in three games, Wellington netted 39, while Hawke's Bay and Manawatu scored 31 each. Wanganui met Wellington first and were slow to get started, being down 1 to 8 at half-time. In the second spell the team’s combination .showed up to more advantage. J. McCashin was outstanding in defence, while P. Montague was especially prominent in the centre third. Wellington took the game with 14 goals to 5. Mr. Rosenbrook, of Manawatu, refereed.

In the second game, against Manawatu, Wanganui had the better of the game throughout and some pleasing team work was witnessed. They led by 13 goals to 2 at half-time and finally won the game 20 to 9. B. Forward was in excellent shooting form and was well fed by her supporting goals/ Miss G. Symes, of Hastings, refereed. In their last game, against Hawke’s Bay, the Wanganui side played the better game throughout and should have emerged winners. They led 10 to 9 at half-time. Scores kept level through the second spell. Wanganui had the most scoring chances but were over-keen and what should have been a victory ended in a draw, 17all. Mr. Rosenbrook again refereed. The Wanganui centres played well throughout.

Playing conditions were poor, most of the games being played in steady drizzle, which made the ball and the courts slippery. The Wanganui team was: J. McCashin (capt.), I. Platt, E. Couchman, C. Forward, M. McCashin, O. Platt, P. Montague, B. Forward, B. Whiting, L. Cuthbertson. The same conditions prevailed at Hawera, where good basketball was played under trying conditions. South Taranaki defeated Wanganui B by 15 points to 12. They fed at half-time 8-2. Wanganui was the superior team in the second spell, scoring 10 goals to South Taranaki’s 7. V. Jackson played an outstanding game for Wanganui, and D. Bosher was prominent throughout. The team was: D. Bosher (capt.), B. Hughes, V. Robertson, K. Gedge, P. Phillips, L. Ernst, E. Bosher. V. Jackson, B. Robb. South Taranaki also defeated Wanganui juniors by 19 to 14. The Queen’s Own team played a friendly game against Hawera Old Girls. After a closely contested match Old Girls won by 14 goals to 11.
