WANGANUI DEFEATS TARANAKI IN WOMEN'S HOCKEY MATCH

In a fast, evenly contested game the Wanganui women’s hockey representatives defeated Taranaki by four goals to three at the Girls' College grounds, Wanganui East, on Saturday.

Wanganui led by two goals to one at the end of the first spell ana scored the winning goal ten minutes before full time. Bergerson played a good game as goalkeeper, as dia Myers and McPhail in the half line. Bignell troubled the Taranaki defence in the second half when she was shifted to centre-forward. Taranaki took longer to settle down, but later played well. Their positional play shaded Wanganui. Lepper at lull-back was sound and at centre-half Horsfall gave a good exhibition. Wanganui opened the scoring after about ten minutes when Bartrum centred across the goal for Peina to send in a difficult angle shot. Wanganui pressed continuously, but play moved back to their goal line, where Taranaki had several chances from penalty corners. Late in the spell a quick move saw Oliver come in from the right wing to score the equaliser for Taranaki. Almost at the interval Bignell beat the Taranaki goalkeeper, Davis- with a hard shot and gave Wanganui the lead at the end of the first spell. Taranaki were called on to defend vigorously at the opening of the second spell, but they broke clear and Mcllraith put in a hard shot to the net. With the scores even again play speeded up. From a penalty Wanganui sent the ball to Peina, who flicked it to Bignell for a high shot into the corner of the goal, putting Wanganui in the lead again. Two minutes later Taranaki were level after Bergerson fell, blocking a shot from Oliver, and Mcllraith had no trouble in netting her second goal. Play swept from one end of the field to the other in fast exchanges which followed, then Wanganui scored the deciding goal. From the half, Peina sent a good pass to the winger Bartrum, who raced up to score with a long shot. The final ten minutes provided no more points. The teams were:-*-
