Wanganui Branch Of National Council Of Women

The monthly meeting of the Wanganui branch of the iNational Council of Women, held in the Hard of Hearing League Rooms on Monday night, was well attended, the president, Mrs A. H. MacL'ean, presiding and welcoming the delegates. A letter was received from Mrs F. Cameron, of the Dunedin branch, thanking the Wanganui branch for its message of congratulation for the New Year honour conferred on her. Application lor affiliation, from the Presbyterian. Womens Missionary Unior was approved. Mrs Mac Lean reported that she and Mrs Whitlock (secretary) had attended the W.I. Federation meeting, and also on the evening put on by the Y.W.C.A. for the immigration committee and the new arrivals from overseas. The new arrivals seem a line type and are fitting into the community. stated the president.

A remit from the W.D.F.F. concerning non-shrink wool was approved. Another remit whicii met with the approval of the meeting was from the Housewives' Association: “That the Government be asked to put on the market Hour which contains 100 per cent, of the wheat berry.” A note added to the remit was: “Present wholemeal flour does not contain wheat germ.” Considerable discussion took place on the question, and one delegate explained that wholemeal is held so long in store that it loses its volatile oil which is so necessary for the health of the body and that the flour also lacks the wheat germ. Various matters cf particular interest to the branch were discussed and members were reminded that next meeting would be the annual one. Thanks were expressed to Mesdames Uttley and H. L. Williams for running the trading stall at previous meetings. Included in the correspondence was a request from Miss Rice, of “Childhaven,” Auckland, for the branch to arrange a meeting of women to hear her speak of the work done in this institution for unmarried mothers. The date suggested, between May 16 and 20, was not c onsiderd suitable and the secretary was instructed to ask Miss Rice to visit Wanganui later if possible. Just what constituted social service was discussed following a request from the newly-appointed professor of the chair of Social Work. Professor David Marsh, for details of the social service organisations in Wanganui. Delegates agreed that it was sometimes difficult to make the distinction between a social organisation and one which included social work in its constitution. The president will compile a list on details supplied by those groups affiliated to the branch.
