Wanganui Housewives’ Association

Members of the Wanganui branch of the Housewives’ Association met yesterday at the Y.M.-Y.W.C.A. fot the annual meeting, Mrs. M. A. Archibald presiding. The annual report, read by the secretary, gave an account of the work done during the year. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The president thanked the secretary and treasurer for their work. Questions discussed were the wrapping, zoning and delivery of bread, the president saying that bread should be wrapped at the source —the bakery. If the Governmeit goes in for expensive machinery for other things why can’t we have machinery for wrapping bread, as hygiene was important as regards food, stated the president, who added that they wanted to see zoning abolished and delivery of bread restored. It was considered that this could be arranged just as other things are done, and that housewives should combine in forcing these issues. The question of-raw versus pasteurised milk came forward, and it was stated that raw milk could not be bought from vendors and they had been instructed not to sell raw milk. One member said that milk bought on a Sunday was marked for Monday's delivery. Another member stated that some mothers were advised to give their babies tinned milk in preference to pasteurised. The rationing of butter also came up for discussion and it was unanimously agreed that rationing of this food’ should be abolished. Preservatives in food, especially in meats, the need for better films, and radio programmes, especially for children, were dealt with. The president said that in the interests of the children the association must do something about it. One has to keep on fighting for these things, she said; it was not only themselves, but other organisations were fighting for the same thing. They should also make a stand against the comics, not only for the matter in them, but because the bad and small print, was bad for the children’s eyes. Mrs. Archibald was re-elected president and the committee remains the same.
