Great Interest Taken In Old Wanganui Girls’ College Photos

Many photographs of former pupils and teaching staffs of the Wanganui Girls’ College, also photos of boarders. prefects, sports teams and various groups taken down the years from 1891 to the present day are featured in an interesting display in an Avenue shop window.

These and other ..ouvenirs and relics have been gathered together by the old girls of the co'leg.. and are to be exhibited at the s hcoi on Saturday v hen an “at hen.e" is being held as part of the jubilee celebrations. At present the window d.splay is attracting considerable attention. As well a.s shields and the Dux medal, a costume dated ISoO shows a white pique coat and skirt of nondescript cut. wuite blouse with stiff white collar amt biack tie. Headgear is a deep crowned straw boater with the college ribbon and crest.

In contrast is the piesent-day school uniform. White pique, which was a popular materia, in the early days of the school, is shown tn a skirt trimmed with large buttons, and with it a much-tucked lacy blouse and also a straw boater with the familiar hatband. Gleaming pearl satin is the material of a ball mess of the period, and also displayed is a bathing dress of 1890. The first Dux medal was presented to Miss J. R. Currie, and a volume of Scott’s poems to Miss Jessica Worgan (Mrs J. C. Wickham). These are shown in the exhibition.
