WEIGHT-LIFTING
Wanganui v. Manawatu When members of the Wanganui Barbell Club met the Manawatu Weightlifters recently one pound was th e deciding factor. When totals were analysed it was found that the Manawatu lifters had won by one pound—and that because they had borrowed a Wanganui lifter to make up a full team; — Bodyweights of the two teams, it was found, were equal—7s4lb. The Wanganui team lifted a total of 2235 lb. <an Austin total of 16531 b.) and the Manawatu lifters totalled 2252 Mb. (an Austin total of 16541 b.) As Manawatus star lifter, E. Metekingi. was refereeing J. Thompson < Wanganui) joined the Manawatu team to make two sides. Manawatu was further handicapped by having a member who had been training for a short time only and who was unable to attain the poundages that come with practice. J. Cullen, an Englishman serving at Ohakea, opened, at a body weight of 1611 b., with a press of 1711 b. He snatched 201 b more than body weight ana jerked 601 b. above. B. Pratt (Wanganui) narrowly failed to press bodyweight but snatched 2516 above. He jerked. 2201 b, 751 b more than bodykeight, and equal to Cullen. Pratt unofficially attempted 2301 b but failed when a knee touched the floor. Results, the figures being bodyweight, press, snatch, jerk, total and Austin total, were: Wanganui: N. Searle 124. 125, 115, 155, 395, 336; J. Skelsey 161, 125, 130, 165, 410, 287; J. Calver 142, 130, 135, 165, 430, 330; B. Pratt 145, 140, 170, 220, 530, 401; N. Frew 182, 130, 150, 190. 470, 299. Total 22351 b < 16531 b. > Manawatu: S. Fell 122, 120, 110, 150, 380, 327; J. Cullen 161, 170. 180, 220, 570, 399; W. Woslev 168, 155, 160. 220. 535, 362; Mitchell 162. 100, 100, 140. 340, 236; J.
