Jewish-Arab Clashes In Jerusalem And Bethlehem Area

JERUSALEM, May 2 (Recd. 6 pm). —Heavy fighting broke out between Jews and Arab Legion troops last night in the Jerusalem-Bet *e-hem area.

Mortar bomb explosions and gunfire were heard all over Jerusalem. The Israeli authorities imposed a blackout pending an investigation. There is no official explanation, but it is bel’eved the fighting started when Jewish troops began to take possession of the railway line from which the Arabs were supposed to withdraw yesterday under the terms of the armistice agreement. The Arabs, it is reported, resisted.
