Barney Clarke Outpoints Light-Heavy Boxing Title Holder, Tommy Downes
PALMERSTON NORTH, Last Night (P.A.)—Barney Clarke, Auckland light-heavyweight, outpointed the title holder, Tommy Downes, Palmerston North, in a 10-round catchweight Professional bout tonight. It was a omd contest with Clarke scoring repeatedly in fierce Jn-fighting exhanges and penetrating Downes’ ~uard with an elusive side inside right. Downes landed his wicked left hook on several occasions but was unable to score a knock-out blow, and as the bout proceeded Clarke built up a steady credit of points. Downes was on the canvas for a count of nine in the first round and in the sixth for no count.
