WANGANUI PIRATES WIN ANNUAL RUGBY TOURNAMENT

Wanganui Pirates won the annual Easter Pirates’ football tournament when they defeated Kia Tea (Palmerston North) 14 points to 3 at Palmerston North yesterday. The match was a hard forward struggle between two evenly matched packs. The Wanganui backs overshadowed their opponents. Beard opened the Wanganui scoring with a penalty goal from 30 yards out. Wanganui went ahead when N. Anderson, the wing three-quarter, scored a brilliant try. He covered half the field and completely outpaced the Kia Toa team. Kia Toa replied with a try by McGill. The half-time score was 6 points to 3. In the second half Wanganui backs combined in some spectacular back rushes. A further three points were scored when Beai d goaled a penalty from 40 yards out. Right on time N. Brown scored a good forward try from a loose scramble on the Kia Toa line. Beard converted. Hawera, who lost to Kia Toa on Saturday, defeated Napier, losers to Wanganui, 32-0. Wanganui won the Cook Shield for Rugby and the Cotterill Shield for athletics. Next year’s tournament will be played at Hawera.
