Auckland Retains Varsity Athletic Championship Title

WELLINGTON, Last Night (P.A.) —Auckland University College easily retained the athletic championship at the inter-university tournament. They gained 27 points, their nearest rival, Canterbury, had 13, Otago 12, Victoria 8. Victoria won the women’s athletic shield with seven points; Otago also had seven points but the shield was awarded to Victoria on a N.Z.A A.A. ruling as Victoria had won more events. Canterbury and Auckland each had two points. Although “ducks" were quite common in the inter-university cricket few expected that they would be prominent in swimming last night. They were. Students with a sense of humour released three of the live variety in the Riddiford baths last night during the swimming championships. The trio were obviously delighted to be in the water again and also a little apprehensive as to their ultimate fate and they eluded capture for a considerable period. Would-be capturers flounced about.the baths in vain endeavours to trap their wily feathered friends. Two were at last seized and born off triumphantly to a dubious fate. The other paddled about unperturbed while two championship events were decided.
