British Government May Tax Inheritances More Heavily

LONDON, April 13 (Rec 7.15 pm). -A hint thnt the Government may tax iinheritances more heavily was given today by Mr. D. Jay, Economic Secretary to the Treasury. Declaring that the distribution of property was still exceedingly unequal. he said that much of the spending seen in the West of London and elsewhere came from owners of inherited property living on their capital. At present the Government was “modestly” taking only about £175,000,000 a year in death duties out of total assessed estates of £650,000,000.
