Heavy Stock Loss In Queensland Drought
BRISBANE, Nov. I—Drought is killing tens of thousands of sheep and cattle in central and north-western Queensland. In the north-west, 30,000 square miles of country which normally carries 50,009 cattle, is practically waterless, and cattle are dying in increasing numbers. The Clio station alone has lost 10,000 lambs. Big flocks of sheep on stock routes leading south are eating fodder so rapidly that it will soon be impossible to move more sheep along the routes. Over 116,000 gallons of water a day are being carried 1000 miles by train to the drought-stricken areas, and already half a million sheep have been transferred from north-west to southwest Queensland and New South Wales.
