25 New Rail Cars Ordered; More Railway Progress

GREYMOUTH, Last Night (PA).— Speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of the opening of the Otira tunnel today, the general manager of railways, Mr. F. Aickin, announced that 25 80-seater railcars had been ordered. They have the latest comforts, but he could not indicate the date of delivery. Mr. Aicken also said that big things would happen in railway improvements next year. The Hutt Valley lines will be electrified in two and ahalf years, followed by the Paekaka-riki-Palmerston North section, then the Auckland suburban lines. When the Roxburgh power scheme is completed the department would give consideration to the electrification of the main South Island lines. More than 600 attended the celebrations, which were marked by an all-day sports meeting and banquet, at which the* principal speaker was Mr. Semple, who worked two years on the tunnel in the stages of initial construction.
