Catchment Board’s Protective Works In Rangitikei River
(O C.) Bulls, Sept. 14. Employees of the Rangitikei Catchment Board are at present engaged in protective works on the northern banks of the Rangitikei River, about a mile upstream from the Bulls Bridge, where extensive willow fenders have been laid out in readiness to being made fast to the bank. When this has been done willows are to be planted alon-j the bank as a further means of holding the action of the water in check. Just prior to the most recent fresh in the river, the main stream showed a tendency to make a permanent veer to the southern bank, which would have simplified the problem some What. One of the greatest handicaps to be overcome is obtaining wire to protect the newly-planted willows from the ravages of stock. NEW BRIDGE APPROACH
Good progress is, being made with the excavation work on the south side of the new Bulls Bridge, where a huge hill-face is to be removed to provide a straight approach. The spoil thus removed is being lorried to the other side of the river, where the road requires building up several feet to bring it into line with the northern end of the structure. The lorries are obliged to make an awkward turn to load from the mechanical shovel, and the constant stream of traffic going past does not make it any easier for the drivers. The situation appears to warrant the diversion of the traffic past the Ohakea aerodrome —entailing but a slight inconvenience to motorists, who owe the truck drivers some consideration. LADIES’ GOLF CLUB.
