Legislative Council Passes The Geneva Trade Agreement Bill

(P.A.) Parliament Bldgs., June 30. The Legislative Council passed the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade Bill today in a sitting that began in the morning to allow the Bill to be passed to provide ratification of the agreement before due date, June 30. Although a number of questions regarding the Bill were raised there was no opposition to it in the Legislative Council. The views expressed showed that some of the councillors were doubtful about the ultimate results of some of the provisions, but that all thought the objectives of the Bill were desirable. After the Bill had been passed the council started its Address in Reply debate, the motion being put by the Hon. W. J. Rogers (Wanganui), who expressed pleasure at learning that His Majesty had consented to visit New Zealand and that he would be accompanied by the Queen and Princess Margaret. The seconder of the motion was the Hon. M. Briggs (Palmerston North).
