THE QUEEN MAKES HISTORY
VISIT TO QUEEN’S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY THE FIRST SINGS QUEEN ANNE’S VISIT IN YEAR 1705. Recd. 6 p.m. London, June 9. The pages of English history were rustled when Queen Elizabeth visited Queen's College, Cambridge, on the occasion of its quincentenary celebrations. The college was founded by Queen Margaret, of Anjou, the “Red Rose” Queen. It was visited by the Tudor and Stuart Queens, but no Queen has been there since Queen Anne, in 1705. Queen Elizabeth spent six hours at the college, ana when she arrived and entered the first quadrangle the college flag, bearing the arms of Queen Margaret, was hauled down and replaced by Her Majesty’s standard. Fellows and honorary fellows were presented by the president, Dr. J. A. Venn and at lunch in the great hall, the traditional boar's head was served. During the afternoon there was a garden party and the Queen also saw a rehearsal of an open-air production of “As You Like It." Her Majesty also visited an exhibition of college treasures in the old chapel. There she saw a 17th. Century medical cabinet of Professor Vigani, the first professor of chemistry at the university. This includes contemporary remedies, such as “dragon’s blood,”- myrrh, quinine, viper, scorpion and claws of crabs. “I have always wanted to see the dragon’s blood and now I have had my wish, commented the Queen.
