Rainfall Figures For Last Year
Hokitika had the heaviest rainfall among the centres of population for 1947, with 85.78 inches on 189 days, according to the Meteorological Office. Alexandra came at the oottom of the list wits 10.21 inches, on 91 days. Wellington enjoyed a generous supply, with 57.70 inches .on 150 days. Auckland fared even better, with 52.19 inches on 162 days. Dunedin had a dry year, with 26.02 inches on 144 days, and Christchurch fared even better, with 25.12 inches on 111 days. Other figures were as follows, the inches being given first and the number of days next: Gisborne, 36.91, 150; New Plymouth, -59.04, 142; Napier, 28.98, 124, Hastings, 28.30, 123; Taihape, 37.81, 151; Wanganui, 35.27, 137; Palmerston North, 39.29, 156; Masterton, 41.64, 135; Lower Hutt. 55.46, 119; Nelson, 41.15, 104; Blenheim, 25.08, 103.
The heaviest fall in the whole of the Dominion was 206.56 inches on 187 days at Milford Sound.
