“Miles Ahead”

Wellington, Oct. 3. Newspapers in New Zealand were “miles ahead” of the popular Press in Britain, commented Mr. P. M. Butler, secretary of the Wellington General Labourer’s Union and a governing member of the Internatioal Labour Organisation, at a reception yesterday afternoon. Mr. Butler said he made this remark although he noticed an old person present in the person of the Hon. James Roberts, M.L.C., who had occasion to make other observations about the New Zealand Press. Mr. Butler said it. was strange to find in Europe more interested politically and economically in New Zealand than was apparent in Britain, and British opinion did not seem to regard New Zealand as an equal, although New Zealand was esteemed by the ordinary people. The British popular Press concentrated on sensationalism.'
