Shops to Close for Monty’s Visit Shops operated by members of the Wanganui Drapers, Clothiers, Furnishers and Boot Retailers’ Association will close from 3 o’clock until 4.30 p.m. on Friday, when Field Marshal Montgomery visits the city. Good Yarding of Pigs
Yesterday’s yarding of pigs at the Wanganui sale conducted by Freeman R. Jackson and Co., Ltd., was stated to be the heaviest for some considerable time. Breeding sows and good top weaners wold well, with store pigs a shade easier.
Fund for Soccer Player A donation of £3 3s toward the expenses of sending J. Smith to Australia with the New Zealand schoolboys' soccer team has been made by the Westmere School, of which Smith is an old boy. The amount handed to the “Chronicle” has reached £lO 9 S 6d and the fund totals approximately £46.
Indoor Bowls. Thirty-six visiting bowlers will be competing in the annual challenge match between the South Taranaki and the Wanganui Indoor Bowling Association on Saturday evening. In the sphere of Wanganui bowling, P. and T. are the present holders of the Signal Shield.
Cress-country Running. The Wanganui Harrier Club will compete at the West Coast (North Island) cross-country championships which will be run at New Plymouth next Saturday afternoon. The New Zealand cross-country championships will be held at Auckland on August 2, at which teams representing the West Coast will take part.
Two Vessels Bringing Coal. The Titoki. which was scheduled to leave Westport at 11 p.m. last night, is expected at Wanganui at about the same time this evening, bringing a cargo of coal. On Saturday or Sunday morning, the Storm, loaded with 800 tons of coal for local discharge, is also due to arrive at Wanganui.
Escaped Prisoners at Large. The three prisoners who escaped from custody when being taken from the National Park railway station to the Waikune Prison on July 3 are still at large. The prisoners, who were in civilian attire when they jumped from the back of a motor truck, were: Hira Heihana, aged 29 years; Bruce Reybourne, aged 22 years; and Bertram Morrin, aged 39 years. relay afternoon the first fifteens of the Wanganui Collegiate School and the Wanganui Technical College played inter-college Rugby matches. The Wanganui Collegiate Schools’ first fifteen played a New Plymouth Boys’ High School team at Wanganui, and the Wanganui Technical College first fifteen played the Palmerston North Boys’ High School at Palmerston North.
Pctrpl for Aircraft A new 500-gallon underground storage tank for petrol has been installed at the Wanganui Airport, bringing the total capacity of the storage tanks to 1500 gallons. The Tiger Moths use 73 octane petrol and of this grade there is storage for 1000 gallons. The new 500-gallon tank will be used for the 80 octane petrol used by the Percival Proctor. During the week-end when a rally was staged by the Wanganui Aero Club, more than 230 gallons of petrol were used. Parties of School Children
Few organised partjeu of school children have been arranged for the reception to Field Marital the Viscount Montgomery at Cook’s Gardens to-morrow. It is expected that some of the nearby country schools will close early in order that their pupil’s can attend the function. However, the attendance of school children is expected to be large in sP*te of the fact that no holiday has been given to enable them to attend.
Heritage Requires £BOOO The fact that the Wanganui branch of Heritage (Inc.) would require some £BOOO during the next seven years to fulfil its aims in the Wanganui district was mentioned at a meeting this week by the chairman, Mr. F. H. Bethwaite. It was reported that to date £823 had been expended in assisting the children of deceased servicemen. The secretary, Mr. J. Small, reported that there were 388 ordinary members and 36 life members. There were now 42 families with 30 boys and 36 girls on the roll.
Shops May Close Shops in Victoria Avenue will revert to the 5.30 p.m. closing next month when the power load will be considerably lower with the passing of the shorter days. Proposals for the extension of the dally hours to 5.30 p.m. are now under consideration by retailers but it is expected that it will not be until about the middle of next month that the hours will be altered. The 5 p.m. closing was inaugurated by city retailers when the power restrictions were severe early in the winter months.
Double Parking Prevalent. The double parking of motor vehicles in Maria Place, especially between Victoria Avenue and St. Hill Street, has become very prevalent recently in spite of a watch by traffic inspectors. On two afternoons this week there have been minor traffic jams near the Post Ullict as a icsult of vehicles being double parked on both sides of the roadway. One commercial vehicle owner waited for 15 minutes for the driver of a doubleparked car to remove his vehicle so that he could leave the parking area in which he was hemmed in. Finally the offending cai had to be pushed away
