GOOD “SELLERS’ DAY” AT STORTFORD LODGE

(P.A.) Hastings, July 16. With springlike conditions making ft a good “sellers’ day,’’ store sheep continued to command attention at Stortford Lodge to-day and the market in consequence was very strong for all classes of sheep. Wether hoggets predominated in the entry of 5000 head, but there were also in-lamb ewes and wethers for those requiring those classes of sheep. Mixed aged In-lamb ewes sold at from 28s to 37s Bd. Five-year-olds brought 29s 9d to 335, and a line of good six-year-olds made 345. Wethers were traded at 35s 5d to 36s 3d. Good wether hoggets met with very keen inquiry to sell at from 30s 8d to 335, and others sold at from 27s 2d to 29s lOd. Small train-smoked ewe hoggets were traded at 30s 7d. The first new season s lamb to make its appearance, a ewe and lamb brought 31s 6d. Though, except for a few odd pens, the fat sheep offering lacked the quality of recent yardings, there was no let-up in inquiry and values were firm. Prime wethers brought 39s 4d to 41s 4d, medium 38s lOd and lighter 36s Id to 16s lOd. Extra prime ewes sold at 33s 4d to 34s 4d, prime at 30s 4d and unfinished at 23s Id to 26s Id, with extra prime young ewes at 38s lOd and prime young ewes at 30s lOd to 35s lOd. A single extra heavy hogget made 44s lOd, heavy hoggets selling at 37s lOd to 39s 4a, medium at 31s 7a to 34s lOd and light at 28s 4d. Last week’s improvement in the store cattle market was fully maintained. Buyers had their opportunities of selection restricted by the short yarding of only 160 head. Weaner steers in particular sold well at improved rates. Rising two-year A.A. steers were traded at £9 7s to £9 17s 6d and weaner steers £7 to £7 4s. Hard-conditioned in-calf cows sold at £6 Is and empty A.A. cows from £7 15s to £9 10s.

Although the short yarding of 160 head of beef contained mainly light to medium-weight beasts, the market was sound. There were no heavyweights among the ox, but lightweights, including some well finished “baby" beasts which offered good cuts, sold from £ll 18s 6d to £lB 18s 6d. Cows provided the bulk of the entry, prime sorts making £ll 18s 6d to £l3 3s 6d, medium £lO 16s to £ll 8s 6d, and unfinished £9 8s 6d to £lO 6s. Prime heifers were traded at £l2 13s 6d to £l4 13s 6d, and lighter £9 8s 6d to £lO 18s 6d. Vealers ranged from £2 12s to £6 9f.
